Marcus Mosiah Garvey was a founder of the United Negro Improvement Association. Garvey, born in Jamaica, West Indies, is best remembered as an important proponent of the back to Africa movement, which encouraged those of African descent to return to their ancestral continent. This movement would eventually inspire other movements, ranging from the Nation of Islam, to the Rastafarti movement, which proclaims Garvey to be a prophet. Garvey said he wanted upfull Africans to redeem Africa and for the Europen colonial powers to leave it.
Marcus Garvey did five years in Atlanta Federal Prison after he was convicted for mail fraud. If Mr. Garvey was living today, he would be labeled a "deportee" in Jamaica because he was deported from the United States. He had a heroes welcome upon his arrival in Jamaica. Garvey also did jail time in Jamaica for contempt of Court.
Make no mistake about it. Unlike many of our DJs and others who like to brag about being badboys and shottas, Marcus was no criminal. He was a rebel with a cause to help black people, a true Jamaican freedom fighter. He would oppose the badmanism that has infested Jamaica today. Marcus died in 1940 in London. In 1964, The government of Jamaica proclaimed Marcus Jamaica's first national hero.
